The Commodore Barry Bridge in Logan Township is still open in both directions. The lanes you get depend on what time you cross and which way you're headed. The Delaware River Port Authority's $220 million rehabilitation began in spring 2025 and is estimated to finish in early 2028. Until then, the bridge between Bridgeport and Chester runs on a schedule that leans one way at midday, narrows at night and can stop for short spells in the late morning.
So the question for anyone driving out of the 08085 is when to cross, not whether.
Five Lanes, Divided by the Clock
The Commodore Barry has five lanes, and DRPA says that low count makes it especially hard to keep daily traffic moving while construction goes on. Here is how those five lanes are divided, based on what DRPA posts and what has been reported:
| When | Toward New Jersey | Toward Pennsylvania | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | 2 lanes | 1 lane | DRPA travel advisory |
| Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | 2 lanes | 1 lane | DRPA travel advisory |
| Weekdays, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. | Possible 15-minute holds, 2 to 3 times a day | Same, in one or both directions | DRPA project page |
| Nightly, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 1 lane | 1 lane | Philadelphia Inquirer, Aug. 7, 2026 |
Look at the midday rows. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, traffic coming home to New Jersey gets two lanes and traffic leaving for Chester gets one. If you cross toward Pennsylvania in the late morning, you're in the single lane, inside the window where crews may stop traffic. The return trip that afternoon has twice the room.
The overnight row needs some care. The one-lane-each-way pattern comes from the Philadelphia Inquirer's August 7, 2026 report. That report also mentioned leftover morning delays, plus daytime lane closures or full stops while crews move equipment and materials. The DRPA advisory page lists only the daytime split, and DRPA's news archive shows no Commodore Barry lane advisory for September or October 2026. Before a late-evening crossing, check DRPA's live alerts rather than assume the summer pattern still holds.
Why a Paint Job Takes Over Travel Lanes
The holds and lane shifts make sense once you see how much work is going on above and below the road. DRPA says the bridge's cantilever truss, steel barriers and overhead gantries have not had maintenance painting since 1996. Crews are blasting and repainting them now, working from hanging platforms inside canvas enclosures that catch the grit, the lead-based paint and the grime.
The painting is only the visible part. DRPA lists these other jobs:
- Repairing and strengthening truss members, stringers, bearings, vibration absorbers and wind pins, with temporary jacking systems holding up the bridge during repairs
- Repairing the concrete deck and the spalled concrete on piers and pier caps
- Replacing more than 14,000 linear feet of electrical conduit and wiring
- Replacing the movable barrier and the machine that moves it
The new movable "zipper" barrier was the first piece, and the Inquirer reports it was finished in summer 2025. That barrier is what lets DRPA hand two lanes to one direction at midday. The midday holds come from a different job. DRPA says the 15-minute stops are needed so cranes can lift and install steel reinforcement plates overhead.
Crews have a lot of steel to cover. The bridge runs 13,912 feet, and repairs reach down to the piers in the river.
Some of the traffic you'd expect to see on the bridge is gone. Since Monday, October 13, 2025, DRPA has barred all oversized and overweight trucks from the Commodore Barry in both directions until further notice. DRPA's project page says wide-load restrictions may stay in place for the whole project.
The Toll Stays the Same, So Timing Matters More
The construction hasn't changed what the crossing costs. DRPA's posted schedule lists $6 for passenger cars, small trucks and SUVs, collected only westbound from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. That schedule took effect September 1, 2024. In December 2025, DRPA said there would be no toll increase in 2026. The bridge carrying construction delays costs the same as it did before the work started.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge, the regional crossing between Pennsville and New Castle, gives a useful comparison. Its posted passenger-car rates are $4.75 with Delaware or New Jersey E-ZPass, $5.00 with other E-ZPass and $6.00 cash. The Delaware River and Bay Authority says its next toll phase starts no earlier than January 1, 2027. That's a comparison, not a detour recommendation. Neither agency has named it the official alternate route for Commodore Barry traffic, and where you're going on the Pennsylvania side decides whether it makes any sense.
With tolls close and frozen for 2026 on both crossings, the toll doesn't decide much. The hour does.
This Week, on the Jersey Side of the Approach
Logan drivers also have one short-term project on Route 322 itself, and it's scheduled to wrap up this week. In a September 4, 2026 release, NJDOT said crews were installing median barrier and replacing guiderail on Route 322 between Route 130 and Mechanic Street. The work is part of a $6.3 million federally funded guiderail and attenuator contract that covers Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem Counties.
According to the NJDOT release, this is how the week is scheduled to go:
- Wednesday, October 7, 8 p.m. to Thursday, October 8, 6 a.m. Eastbound left-lane closure to remove barrier. The eastbound shoulder is expected to reopen by October 8.
- Thursday, October 8, 8 p.m. to Friday, October 9, 6 a.m. Westbound left-lane closure to remove barrier. The westbound shoulder is expected to reopen by October 9.
NJDOT expects at least one lane to stay open during those overnight closures. It also says the timing can change. If you're driving toward the bridge late Wednesday or Thursday night, the state's guiderail work and the bridge's own night restrictions may overlap.
From a Sixty-Car Ferry to 41,000 Crossings a Day
Bridgeport has been the Jersey end of this crossing for close to a century. The Chester-Bridgeport Ferry started running on July 1, 1930, with room for 60 cars per trip. Six years later, the Inquirer reports, its boats were added to the federal highway system as movable sections of U.S. Route 332. The ferry made its last crossing on February 1, 1974, the day the Commodore Barry opened.
Fifty years on, the bridge carried 15.1 million vehicles in 2024, an average of more than 41,000 crossings a day, according to DRPA. Those 41,000 daily trips now share five lanes with a construction crew. That's why the posted lane split and the midday holds can shape a Logan resident's day more than the distance does.
The bridge's ties to the township also run through Bridgeport's own buildings. Logan Township's municipal court at 125 Main Street hears matters involving DRPA officers on the Commodore Barry Bridge.
When the Clock Says Stay on This Side
Some errands can stay in Logan when the crossing schedule doesn't cooperate. Village Center Drive has several stops in one place:
- Papa Luigi's Pizza at 11 Village Center Drive offers dine-in, pickup and delivery.
- The Village Pub at 5 Village Center Drive posts weekly hours and takes online orders.
- Del Buono's bakery at 8 Village Center Drive has been open since its July 1, 2025 soft opening.
Down the street, Dollar Tree is converting the former Rite Aid at 335 Village Center Drive. As of late August 2026, local reports said no opening date had been announced. The Gloucester County Library System's Logan Township Branch at 498 Beckett Road is open Monday through Saturday and has a public meeting room.
For trips that do need the bridge, DRPA's free text alerts are the simplest way to keep up. Text DRPA to 888777 for bridge alerts, or DRPAPATCO for every DRPA and PATCO category, through the DRPA alerts page. The project page lists the work schedule and the restrictions motorists should expect until the early-2028 finish.
